On July 15, 2022, HOME hosted the Housing First: Solutions for People Experiencing Homelessness forum at the Oxnard Library, bringing together housing experts, policymakers, and service providers to discuss the Housing First model and strategies to support individuals experiencing homelessness.
Presenters included Jennifer Harkey (County of Ventura, Continuum of Care Alliance), Emilio Ramirez (City of Oxnard Housing Director), Tony Stewart (City of Port Hueneme Housing Director), and Laura Hernandez (Port Hueneme Councilmember). Additionally, fourteen local service providers shared their experiences, goals, and ways the community can support and expand their efforts.
The discussion emphasized the importance of stable housing as a foundation for recovery and self-sufficiency, along with challenges such as funding, service coordination, and long-term sustainability. Attendees engaged in an open-mic session, fostering dialogue on practical solutions, policy improvements, and community-driven initiatives.
